Motion Sensor Lights: How To Install

Motion Sensor Lights: How To Install

October 24, 2020

Motion sensor lights are perfect for any location that does not need light all of the time. Instead, the light is only triggered by any motion that occurs in the sensor’s field of view. Once you get your motion sensor light the next challenge is to install it. Thankfully all motion sensor lights from Boundery do not require any hardwiring and are installed in minutes. With only a few simple tools you will be on your way to lighting up your home or business. Below outlines each type of motion sensor light, where it is best located, and exactly how to install the light.

Motion Sensor Bulb

The motion sensor bulb is one of the most versatile and easy to install. The motion sensing bulb looks just like a normal light bulb and can be screwed into any light socket. It detects light up to 10 feet away and has a 120 degree motion sensor so that you can approach from almost any angle. These are perfect if you want to save energy by not having your lights on all of the time without having to install any new fixtures.

Location: While you can install this light bulb in any standard light socket, it can be used inside or outdoors to fit your needs. If you are looking for the perfect location for these lights it is in areas that are not consistently frequented and have limited visibility. For example, by installing this in your stairwell you can prevent unwanted falls and only light up the stairs when someone is walking up or down. Dark corners or closets are also great places for these to be placed. Just keep in mind where you wish you had a light, but may not have the time to flip a switch.

Installation: As stated previously, the installation for the motion sensor bulb is very simple and requires a standard light socket. Follow these steps to correctly and safely install the light bulb.

  1. Turn off the breaker for the light socket
  2. Unscrew the current light bulb
  3. Screw in the new light bulb completely
  4. Return the breaker into the on position
  5. The light should now be fully functional. Keep in mind that the motion detection will not turn on during the day time.

Motion LED Light Bar

The motion LED light bar is a 188 mm LED bar constructed of ten LED light bulbs. The light is low profile and automatically turns on when someone is within the range of the light, and turns off when motion is undetected for 15 seconds. It does not require any hardwiring and pulls electricity from AAA batteries, which are easily changed.  These lights are very versatile and easy to install.

Location: The long and slim nature of the LED light bars make them perfect for hard to reach places and also those that are too small for bulky lighting fixtures. Also, because there are no wires needed there does not have to be an outlet or wired power source necessary. Some common locations for placement are under cabinet lighting, in closets, in dark cabinets, and even behind your TV. With so much versatility these lights can truly be placed anywhere. They are perfect for the hard to reach spot that you wish had more visibility when you reach your arm for that midnight snack.

Installation: No wires, drills, or tools are needed to install these lights. The back of the light bar is magnetic and will stick to any magnet. The package includes an adhesive magnetic strip that easily sticks to any surface so that your light bar can be applied.

  1. Choose your location to install
  2. Clean the area to remove any excess residue
  3. Remove the cover from the adhesive and stick to the flat surface
  4. A level may be used to ensure it is straight
  5. Magnetize the light bar to the magnetic strip
  6. The light should now be fully functional. Keep in mind that the motion detection will not turn on during the day time.

Wall Motion Sensor Lights

Wall motion sensor lights are usually used outdoors to increase visibility at night or may even be used as a security device. The lights will turn on whenever they detect motion, so this is perfect if you have animal intruders or are worried about unwanted guests arriving at your home. It is also great if you do not feel comfortable leaving your home lights on at night when you leave, but would like to see your surroundings when you return home. These lights are also solar powered so they do not require a power source and are self sustaining for up to 10 thousand hours. They are weather resistant and require very minimal maintenance.

Location: The lights must be installed on a flat surface outdoors. Because they are solar powered they require the power from the sun, so they must be in a location where they will get adequate sunlight throughout the day to charge. Some common locations are by the garage, front door, and even along a dark walkway. Another great location is if you have a trash area outside you can feel safe going to take your trash out at night. It may even scare the critters from getting into your trash.

Installation: Installation will require a couple of tools including a drill, level, a pencil, 2 screws, and a screwdriver. The process should only take about five to ten minutes.

  1. Unlock and activate the light by pressing the power button in the bottom center
  2. Choose your location to install
  3. Level the light using a level
  4. Trace the holes with the pencil, then remove the light from the wall
  5. Use a drill bit to drill holes where you traced
  6. Screw in the light to the wall using a screwdriver or drill
  7. The light should now be fully functional. Keep in mind that the motion detection will not turn on during the day time.

LumiGuard ReachLite

The LumiGuard ReachLite is a solar powered light that extends to provide adequate lighting outdoors. The light is controlled by a remote control so that height is no issue. Not only does the remote have the ability to turn the light on and off, it can also extend or shorten the pole to make it closer or further from the wall. The light can “see” up to 26 feet away so it can be prepared before you even approach it. It also has a 270 degree of motion coverage, which is higher than many motion sensored lights.

Location: This solar motion light should be installed outdoors, and is perfect for high items and locations that need adequate overhead lighting. Driveways, carports, entryways, and fences are locations that would be very suitable for this light.

Installation:  The most challenging part of the installation will be getting to height where you choose to install. Ensure that you safely use a ladder and have another person present to spot you.

  1. Choose your location to install
  2. Level the light using a level
  3. Trace the holes with the pencil, then remove the light from the wall
  4. Use a drill bit to drill holes where you traced
  5. Screw in the light to the wall using a screwdriver or drill
  6. Turn on the light using the power button on the remote control
  7. The light should now be fully functional. Keep in mind that the motion detection will not turn on during the day time.

No matter what motion light you decide to use the installation should be very manageable and easy to complete. Within a couple minutes you will have your motion sensor light installed. The most difficult part may be which light to choose and where you want to put it.
