If you’re looking to get into prepping, it can be really tough trying to figure out where to start. Even though it may be tempting to just go out and buy every single product that you see that may be relevant, it’s best to have a more moderated and methodical approach. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day -- and your stockpile won’t be either.
Instead, we recommend that you focus on one or two different elements every month or so -- whatever you can manage. You should focus on the most important ones first and move your way down the list.
Follow along to learn everything you need to know about how to build the perfect prepper kit for beginners.
The first thing that you need to think about is shelter. In most cases, this is going to mean a tent. You’re going to want to look for something small and light. Don’t just go for the biggest tent you can find.
Instead, look for the smallest one you and your family members can fit into so that you don’t have to worry about carrying around excess weight. You also need to make sure that the tent is quite durable and made with quality material that doesn’t rip easily and can withstand the elements.
However, if you aren’t too thrilled about the idea of carrying around a tent, simple tarps could act as an alternative as they are lighter to carry. That being said, if you are going with the tarp route, make sure to do some research and practice different shelter configurations ahead of time so that you can actually use your tarp.
The second thing that you need to think about is water -- we quite literally cannot survive for long without it and it’s definitely something that we tend to take for granted. However, you shouldn’t take it for granted when it comes to your prepper kit.
For your home, make sure that you have extra potable water on-hand -- enough for everyone in your household (including pets) for a few days. Also be sure to have extra amount of water on hand for sanitation and cleaning purposes.
If you’re on the go, you will need to think about water differently since you won’t really be able to lug it around with you. For these circumstances, you will need a water filter in addition to water purification tablets. That way, you won’t have to worry about starting a fire to boil your water before you’re able to drink it. This is key because dehydration can set in very quickly and finding a water source isn’t always the easiest of tasks.
The third thing that you need to think about is food. Growing your food stockpile in your home is the first step that you need to take. This doesn’t mean that you have to go out and buy a ton of stuff all at once, but maybe just pick up a few extra items for your stockpile every time you go out for your regular grocery shopping.
Make sure to prioritize non-perishable food items that are able to remain in your stockpile for long periods of time.
Here are some food items that you should definitely have on your list:
If you’re going with canned items, also make sure to include a can opener with your prepper kit. On the other hand, if you’re looking for more portable or long-term food options, you may want to consider Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) food items, freeze-fried foods, or even seeds so that you’re able to grow your own food and survive on your own in the long-term.
Once you have the basics of food, water, and shelter down, it’s time to move on to fire within your prepper kit. Fire should be priority number four while surviving as it can provide a way to keep warm, cook food, purify water, etc. That being said, this can be one of the more difficult areas to master when it comes to prepping.
For your kit, you need to have firewood at home in addition to matches and lighters. However, we also recommend that you have a few extra fire starters in addition to basic matches and lighters that don’t always last and can be ruined by water. In fact, there are some great fire starters that are super small and portable. Just make sure that you take the time to practice so that you can actually use them if needed.
Even though a good fire can act as a source of light, you’re going to want easier and more effective sources for your prepper kit as well. There are so many different options out there when it comes to lighting that it’s hard to know which items are actually worth buying.
One tip is to look for products that feature LED lights that are brighter and extremely long-lasting.
Here are some of our favorite LED light products that you should incorporate into your prepper kit:
As you can see, solar power is another thing that you should definitely consider when assembling lighting products for your kit. That way, you can rest assured that you’ll still have light even if you run out of batteries or don’t have access to a power source.
Even though a fire will provide you with some warmth, you also need to have other items in your kit to provide this as well. We recommend things like utility blankets and sleeping bags. Whichever one you go with, make sure that they are super warm and insulated while still being weatherproof and water resistant.
We personally love the Boundery utility blanket that’s made with super soft polar fleece and has a reinforced PEVA backing for a blanket that’s flame retardant, waterproof, and windproof.
No prepper kit is complete without basic tools. You’re going to want to have a few effective and small tools that you can use for a variety of different things.
You definitely need a knife or even a multitool with several different functions. Also make sure that you have things like rope, duct tape, zip ties, a small ax, and heavy gloves in your kit as well. With these products, you are quite literally giving yourself the tools to survive any situation.
The last thing you need in your beginner prep kit is a solid first aid kit. You can either buy a pre-made one or assemble your own. You will need a variety of items, including tweezers, bandaids, gauze, medications, antibiotic cream, anti-itch cream, and antiseptic wipes.
As you can see, assembling a great prepper kit is definitely possible with the right amount of research and dedication. Just make sure that you don’t skimp on your products and purchase high-quality and durable options like those made available at Boundery.
